Of the 26 stores that loaded, seven showed a signup popup in that time. We copied the text of each exactly as shown. We did not enter an email address or submit any form.

The other 19 stores showed us no signup popup. That does not mean they never do. A store may show popups only to some countries, after a longer wait, or when a visitor moves to leave.

Popups change by country, device, time, and visit history, and stores run tests. Your visit may look different. The US storefront was shown for every store except Glossier, which redirected to its Cambodia storefront. Timings are approximate, because we checked at intervals rather than watching continuously.

What do the seven popups have in common?

Most offered a first-order discount and asked for an email address only. It asks for an email address and a style choice: Womens, Mens or Both, with Womens preselected. The main button names the 20% offer, and the decline reads "No Thanks". It appeared within the first half minute.

What to copy: state the exclusion next to the offer. A question like the style choice can let a store sort subscribers from day one. Klaviyo's help center says more data can help build connections with subscribers. A single email field sits under the line "Get the latest news on fresh gear, exciting collaborations, and all the good stuff." The button says "Join the Club". A note reads "Some exclusions apply" and links to the details. There is no decline button, only an X. It appeared between about 5 and 15 seconds.

What to copy: the small label names what the visitor is joining, a club, before they read the offer, and the button repeats it. The exclusions link keeps the headline short without hiding the terms.

<picture></picture>
Taylor Stitch's popup, seen on October 31, 2026.

3. Only an X closes it. It was open at our first check.

What to copy: the offer has two parts, a discount and early access, and the text ties both to the season. A cookie banner covered the lower part of the popup on screen, but its text, read from the page, had no consent line.

<picture></picture>
Olipop's popup, seen on October 31, 2026.

4. The buttons are "Sign Up" and "No thanks, I'll pay full price". The first step has no field, and the dialog is titled "Sign Up via Text for Offers".

We did not open the next step, so we did not see any phone field or consent text that may follow. It appeared after about 20 to 25 seconds, at the same time as a cookie banner. We had scrolled in that window, so a scroll may have triggered it.

What to copy, with care: text signups have their own rules. Klaviyo's help center says you should always use double opt-in for SMS lists because carriers often require it. No commitment." It asks for an email, and the button reads "Send me a pack". The decline says "No, thanks". It appeared between about 30 and 45 seconds, and we had scrolled once, so we cannot separate a timer from a scroll trigger.

What to copy: the button names what the visitor gets, not what the store gets. One gap: the popup text does not say whether the cards are free. If your offer costs the visitor anything, say so in the popup.

<picture></picture>
Ugmonk's popup, seen on October 31, 2026.

6. Under it, a consent line says the email includes "automated promotional and personalized marketing messages (i.e cart reminders)" and that consent is not a condition of purchase. Only an X closes it. It appeared between about 30 and 45 seconds, in our run that included a scroll.

On a second visit the same day, the privacy banner had no necessary-only option, and the popup appeared only after we clicked "Continue to Site".

What to copy: naming the kinds of email in the consent line fits the GDPR's rule that consent be specific and informed. The buttons are "Sign up" and "No thanks". It appeared after about 20 to 25 seconds.

What to copy: the visitor ticks the box, so no pre-ticked box is involved. The GDPR text says that silence, pre-ticked boxes or inactivity do not constitute consent. A US visitor may see a different popup, so check your own market.

8. A rotating bar at the top of the page read "Get 15% off when you sign up for emails" and linked to a signup page. We did not open that page.

What to copy: you can offer the same incentive without interrupting. Klaviyo's help center says banner forms are less intrusive than popups and can open another form when clicked. Three patterns are worth testing against each other:

A discount: Everlane, Taylor Stitch, and Olipop. Keep any exclusions visible next to the offer.

A sample or gift: Ugmonk and Liquid Death. Say what the visitor gets and whether it costs anything.

No incentive: Glossier, with an unticked consent box.

Then test one change at a time: the offer, the timing, or the decline wording. Klaviyo's help center describes popups as eye-catching but potentially disruptive, and flyouts as noticeable while letting visitors keep browsing.

Add the consent steps your countries require before you launch. Our guide to how to grow an email list for your online store covers the steps and the consent table. Our guide to exit-intent popups covers when to show the popup.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good offer for an email popup?

No source we found shows which offer wins. Of the seven popups in this guide, four offered a percentage off the first order, one offered a free gift, one offered a sample, and one offered no incentive. Klaviyo's help center suggests adding a coupon block to the success step of a form. Pick the offer your margins allow, then test it against a plain version.

When should an email popup appear?

It depends, and no source gives a best delay. The seven popups we opened appeared within about 45 seconds, and Olipop's was already open at our first check, roughly 10 seconds in. Klaviyo's help center suggests showing a crucial message immediately or after 1 or 2 seconds, since visitors rarely stay long on a page. Test a few timings against each other.

How many fields should an email popup have?

Start with one, the email address. Five of the seven popups we opened asked for the email only. Everlane added a choice between Womens, Mens and Both. Klaviyo's help center says packing too much into a form makes it harder for a visitor to say yes, and that more data can help build connections. Add a field only when you will use the answer.

Do you need a consent checkbox in the popup?

It depends on where your customers live. In the EU, the GDPR says silence or pre-ticked boxes do not count as consent. Glossier's popup shows an unticked box with a consent line, while Taylor Stitch and Ugmonk showed none in the popup.
